Student Research Grants
It is a priority of the North American Society for Pediatric Exercise Medicine (NASPEM) to support applied, and clinical research.
The 2006 Winners of the Students Research Grants are:
Lauren Shearer: University of Saskatchewan, Canada. Supervisor: A.D.G. Baxter-Jones
Title of project: What prevents adolescent girls from being physically active? The effects and interaction of growth and maturation.
Hyun-Ju Oh: University of Utah, USA. Supervisor: J.C. Hannon
Title of project: Difference in body composition, physical activity and dietary intake by birthplace in youth of Mexican origin.
Kelly R. Laurson: Iowa State University, USA. Supervisor: J.Eisenmann
Title of project: The tumor necrosis factor alpha- 308 polymorphism and childhood fatness: associations with physical activity and regional adiposity.
Eligibility: Applicants for student research grants must have student status during the term of the grant to be considered for funding. Applicants must be current members of NASPEM at the time of submitting an application to be funded. The grant program is open to all NASPEM members, including international members.
The following are required:
- Research Proposal (limited to 5 pages - 12 point, Times New Roman, double spaced)
- A Timeline and Budget should be included as appendices (separate pages from the research proposal)
- A letter of support for the proposal from the faculty advisor (who must be a current NASPEM member)
Applications deadline for 2007 competition 5:00 pm (PST) Friday October 26th 2007.

Up to three student awards of $500-$1000 will be awarded depending upon funding availability. Applicants can submit proposals with costs in excess of $1000, the award, however, will only be within the funding range stated.
Each proposal will be reviewed by 2 reviewers. If the two reviewers do not agree on the disposition of a proposal, a third reviewer will be used.
Reviewers will use a rating system to evaluate the proposals on these dimensions:
(a) Rationale for the study
(b) Hypothesis/Problem statement
(c) Methods
(d) Expected outcomes
Award Winners will be notified at the end of January 2008.
